Speaking Lesson from Ben & Jerry’s: The Core
Ben & Jerry’s newest ice cream invention, The Core, offers a powerful speaking lesson for each of us.
The concept is simple yet brilliant. We traditionally think of hot fudge as a “topping,” to be enjoyed at the beginning of our ice cream eating experience. By the time we are half-way done, the hot fudge is long gone. In a Core Sundae, however, the fudge runs straight down the center of the ice cream, so you can enjoy your “topping” the entire time.
The same is true for the Core Message of your presentation. Speakers often treat their central message as a topping and mention mainly at the beginning of the talk. By the time the presentation is over, the message is lost. Instead, think of it as the hot fudge that runs through the entire presentation.
From the Green Room: Before you sit down to write your presentation, make certain you are 100 percent clear on your core message. Then, let your message drive the entire presentation. Not only will this improve the clarity of your content, but it will help reduce your speaking anxiety as well.
